THE “ISLAMIC DILEMMA”

DEBUNKED.
VISUALLY.

The “Islamic Dilemma” sounds clever because it hides one extra claim: that when the Qur’an confirms earlier revelation, it must approve every sentence in every later biblical collection. The Qur’an never says that.

01 / THE TRAP

First, let’s build the argument.

Then we can see exactly where it breaks.

THE “ISLAMIC DILEMMA” ARGUMENT RUNNING
P1

The Qur’an confirms the Torah and Gospel.

TRUE — with a scope question
P2

Today’s Bible disagrees with the Qur’an on some claims.

TRUE — disagreement exists
HIDDEN

“Confirms” means absolutely approves every relevant claim in the later biblical corpus.

UNPROVEN — the entire trick

Therefore, the Qur’an must be false.

BLOCKED
DOES NOT FOLLOW

EXPLAIN IT LIKE I’M 8

A dilemma needs two locked doors.

This argument paints one door on the wall and calls it locked. It assumes “confirm” means “every word is perfect.” Prove that assumption first—or there is no dilemma.

DON’T PICK THE CONVENIENT READING

Which meaning does the evidence support?

We do not choose qualified confirmation merely because it avoids a contradiction. We derive it from the Qur’an’s own statements and examples.

Read the whole Qur’anconfirmation + authority + distortion + correctionQUALIFIED SCOPE

The qualified reading is justified before we ask whether it produces a contradiction. Avoiding contradiction is the result—not the reason for choosing it.

THE PRECISE LOGICAL POINT

The critic needs the Qur’an to entail absolute confirmation. The Muslim only needs to establish that a qualified reading is coherent within the Qur’an. Once a coherent qualified reading exists, the dilemma’s conclusion is no longer necessary.

02 / THE QUR’AN’S OWN MODEL

The whole model.

Revelation begins with God. People pass it down. The Qur’an judges what remains.

03 / PUT THE TEXTS SIDE BY SIDE

Moses’ hand exposes the trick.

The Qur’an does not quietly skip the disease. It goes out of its way to say without disease—exactly the kind of clarification you would expect when another account says the hand was diseased.

THE BIBLEExodus · chapter 4 · verse 6
open NIV ↗

Moses puts his hand inside his cloak. When he pulls it out, it is “diseased, as white as snow.”

His hand comes out white—“without disease”—as another sign.

DISEASE EXPLICITLY DENIED
}

WHY THIS MATTERS

The Qur’an does not merely leave the disease out. It says the opposite.

This is a conscious correction. The Qur’an retells the same sign, then deliberately blocks the diseased-hand reading. It cannot be endorsing “diseased” and denying disease at the same time. So “confirmation” cannot mean approval of every claim in today’s Bible.

ONE CLEAR COUNTEREXAMPLE IS ENOUGH∴ ABSOLUTE CONFIRMATION FAILS
1SAME STORY

Staff, cloak, white hand—the shared scene is obvious.

2DIRECT NEGATION

Exodus says disease. The Qur’an says without disease.

3LOGICAL RESULT

“Confirms” cannot mean “endorses every biblical claim.”

THINK OF IT LIKE THIS

A teacher reads a student’s answer and says: “Your explanation is broadly correct—but this line is wrong.” Nobody would claim the teacher absolutely confirmed every sentence. The correction itself tells you how broad the confirmation was.

A

REST / FATIGUE

“Rested and was refreshed”

Exodus 31:17 describes God resting and being refreshed after creation. Qur’an 50:38 says creation caused Him no fatigue.

B

SOLOMON / DISBELIEF

“Solomon did not disbelieve”

The Qur’an explicitly clears Solomon of disbelief while 1 Kings portrays him turning after other gods.

C

THE CRUCIFIXION

“They did not crucify him”

The Qur’an directly denies a claim central to the canonical Gospels. That is impossible to square with the critic’s alleged blanket confirmation.

THE POINT 🎯

The Qur’an is clearly not trying to certify every biblical claim. A critic may argue that a Qur’anic correction is wrong—but cannot pretend the Qur’an accidentally endorsed the very claim it deliberately rejected.

04 / THE CONTROLLING VERSE

Confirmation and authority.

Qur’an 5:48 gives both functions in one sentence.

SAY THIS

It means witness, guardian, judge or trustworthy overseer. Because it is the authority over earlier scripture, it confirms truth and rules against false attribution.

NOT MODERN DAMAGE CONTROL

Ibn Taymiyyah recorded Christians making essentially this objection centuries ago.

In al-Jawāb al-Ṣaḥīḥ, he answers that the Qur’an affirms genuine revelation while acting as witness, judge and trustworthy authority over what came before—accepting truth, rejecting alteration and superseding earlier law.

AN OUTSIDE ACADEMIC DESCRIPTION

Christian scholar Sidney H. Griffith describes the Qur’an’s handling of biblical tradition as corrective of, even polemical toward Jewish and Christian readings. That does not make him a Muslim apologist; it shows that selective, corrective engagement is a normal academic description of what the Qur’an is doing.

FIRST: TEST THE JUDGE

Is the Qur’an genuinely from God?

Examine evidence that does not depend on biblical agreement: transmission, message, fulfilled prophecy and other public arguments.

2

Here is the strongest version of that objection—and the distinction it misses.

08 / OPEN ANY QUESTION

Objections, answered.

Open one question at a time. The short answer comes first; extra clarification stays tucked away until you ask for it.

01“Confirming what is with them” must mean their whole book was correct.+

Simple: If I say “your science book confirms gravity,” I did not certify every sentence in the book. “Confirms” needs an object and a scope. The Qur’an can confirm genuine revelation, a prophecy, a covenant or surviving truth without certifying an entire later corpus.

The dilemma turns a relational verb into a universal quantifier. Neither muṣaddiq (“confirming”) nor “what is with/before them” means “every claim in every biblical copy.” Qur’anic passages accusing concealment and distortion limit that scope.

02Qur’an 5:47 tells Christians to judge by the Gospel.+

Simple: It says judge by what Allah revealed in it—not by everything later placed inside a collection.

Classical answers include: the command concerns Jesus’s community before Muhammad; or it addresses later Christians but limits judgment to what Allah actually revealed. Within the Qur’an’s own frame, genuine Gospel guidance would not license rejecting the final messenger. Neither reading certifies the whole New Testament.

Read 5:46–48 ↗
03Qur’an 5:43 says the Jews had Allah’s judgment in the Torah.+

Simple: Some real law remaining in a book does not make every line perfect. The point is that they hid a ruling they still had.

The stoning incident is the practical model: the Prophet asks what their Torah says; the reader covers the relevant line; it is exposed. The episode demonstrates surviving truth plus concealment, not blanket textual certification.

Sahih Muslim 1700a ↗
04Qur’an 5:68 says to uphold the Torah and Gospel.+

Simple: “Uphold what God revealed” does not mean “treat every later human claim as God’s words.”

The verse itself adds “and what has been revealed to you from your Lord.” In the Islamic reading, sincerely following genuine prior revelation includes accepting its monotheism, prophecies and the later revelation—not freezing revelation before Muhammad.

Qur’an 5:68 ↗
05Qur’an 7:157 says they find Muhammad written “with them.”+

Simple: One true description can remain inside a mixed book. Finding one gold coin in a box does not turn the whole box into gold.

The verse claims that recognizable descriptions survived. That fits partial preservation; it does not certify every page around them. These videos present several Muslim readings of possible biblical references. They are further arguments to examine—not replacements for reading the texts yourself.

Qur’an 7:157 ↗
06Qur’an 10:94 tells Muhammad to ask people who read earlier scripture.+

Simple: Confirming one shared story does not make someone the judge of the whole revelation.

Quran.com’s tafsīr presentation explains the address as an indirect challenge to skeptics: people familiar with earlier scripture could confirm the shared pattern of earlier messengers and destroyed nations. Ibn ʿĀshūr discusses this indirect style as a way of addressing the resistant audience without provoking immediate defensiveness. The verse therefore uses them as witnesses to a point; it does not make them final authorities or declare every book in their possession untouched.

Read Qur’an 10:94 with tafsīr ↗
07Muhaymin means guardian, not “corrector.”+

Simple: Correct—the word is not a magic synonym for “corrector.” A judge still decides what is true and false.

The argument rests on function, not a forced one-word gloss. Witness, guardian, judge and trustworthy overseer are complementary senses. Qur’an 5:48 then commands Muhammad to judge by what Allah revealed and not follow competing desires.

08The Bible already existed before Islam, so Muslims need a global rewrite afterward.+

Simple: No. The Islamic claim does not require every Bible to be changed after Muhammad.

Classical Muslim discussion allowed distortion before Muhammad, variation among copies, additions and omissions, concealment and corrupt interpretation—while genuine material remained. The dilemma attacks a crude theory Islam does not require.

09Maybe Muhammad borrowed oral folklore. Then these are mistakes, not corrections.+

Simple: That is a different argument. It still admits the Qur’an means to disagree.

A critic may offer borrowing or folklore as a historical explanation for Qur’anic differences. But the internal dilemma needs the Qur’an to endorse the very claims it denies. If the Qur’an deliberately rejects those claims—even for reasons the critic thinks mistaken—the alleged confirmation contradiction disappears. The critic has moved from “your book contradicts itself” to “I think your book is historically wrong.”

10If earlier scripture was altered, why would God allow it?+

Simple: “I do not know why” is not a contradiction.

Theological answers include earlier messages being temporary and entrusted to communities, later prophets correcting disputes, and the final revelation receiving an explicit preservation promise. But none of those explanations is needed to defeat the dilemma. A question about divine wisdom is not proof of logical inconsistency.

11Isn’t choosing only the “good parts” circular?+

Simple: The Qur’an is not being proved by the Bible. It is being tested separately, then used as the stated criterion.

There are two debates. The internal debate asks whether the Qur’an contradicts itself; there, Qur’an 5:48 openly supplies its own hierarchy. The external debate asks whether the Qur’an deserves that authority; that must use evidence independent of biblical agreement. Mixing those two questions creates the appearance of a circle.

THE CLAIMQur’an confirms earlier revelation + THE EXTRA“therefore every later biblical claim” A DILEMMAthe missing scope was never proved
READY-TO-SEND ANSWER

The Islamic Dilemma only works if “the Qur’an confirms earlier revelation” means “the Qur’an endorses every claim in the later Bible.” But that unlimited scope is never proved. The Qur’an says it judges earlier scripture, accuses people of distortion, and directly corrects inherited details. So the conclusion does not follow.

09 / VERDICT

Not a dilemma.
A hidden premise.

1

The Qur’an confirms original revelation and surviving truth.

2

The Qur’an also claims distortion, concealment and false attribution occurred.

3

The Qur’an calls itself the authority over earlier scripture.

4

The Qur’an deliberately rejects specific inherited claims.

Therefore:

The Qur’an does not teach absolute confirmation of today’s Bible. Without that premise, the “Islamic Dilemma” cannot reach its conclusion.
